How to prepare for GATE along with ESE

Let’s start with a bit of basic what exactly ESE and GATE are? Some of you might know and some of you might not know what exactly are they. Let’s clear all your doubts. If students want to go on some high position then they need to go through competitive exams. Students who want to become engineers then there are two main exams for them. One is the Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering (GATE) and Engineering Service Examination (ESE).

ESE is an exam which is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSE). While GATE is conducted by Indian Institute of Science(IISc), Banglore or any of 7 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs).

Both the examinations have almost similar syllabus and different pattern of exams and different type of questions asked. In this article, we will guide students by telling them how they can prepare for GATE and ESE , & how to become GATE Topper.

So, now you know what these exams exactly now let know why preparing for both are important.

Reason for preparing IES & GATE both

We will now discuss IES & GATE side by side & will see if it is possible to study for both at the same line.

What is ESE

  • It’s an examination of national prestige conducted yearly by union public service commission. (UPSC)
  • It is mainly conducted against the vacancies in a different department of Govt. of India in your respective preferred branch.
  • Only engineering core branches students are invited in this examination namely Civil, Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics & Telcom(E&T).

Why GATE

  • Through this, you can get a good college for M.Tech and Ph.D.
  • So many  remunerative opportunities for research.
  • Prestigious jobs in PSUs or Govt. Organization.

Let us discuss how to prepare for GATE along with ESE :-

Make strategy

Before starting preparation, you need to know about the common topics in both exams because these topics will be easier to cover. You also need to know about the different topics in the two exams as these topics need special attention and care. A proper strategy must be developed while preparing for both exams. A strategy includes reading the subjects and solving last year papers.

Syllabus

Although 65-70 percent of the syllabus asked in both of the exams is common but still there are some other major outlines and boundaries which should be kept in mind while preparing for both the exams.

CommonIES (only)GATE (only)
Mathematics (objective)Current Affair (objective)Regular English (objective)
Branch specified subjects (objectives)Engineering Aptitude (objective)
General Aptitude (objective)

Branch specific subject

(conventional)

Technical subjects (objective)

Common topics: For the topics that are common for both the exams, it will be easy for you to prepare and revise later. You can refer to previous year papers to get the perspective about the exam patterns.

Different topics: For such subjects, you must manage time and allot ample time to them.

Branches Eligibility

For ESE there are only four branches which are allowed to give this exam

  • Civil Engineering (CE)
  • Mechanical Engineering (ME)
  • Electrical Engineering (EE)
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (E&T)

While in GATE this year there are 25 papers available for students to choose from.

Let’s learn about more key factors on which your GATE & ESE preparation depends.

Time management

The most important thing for preparing for exams is time management. Make a schedule so that you can give every subject due time and regard along with deadlines for each subject. Time management is important for cracking the exams. As I talked about how strategy is essential, and here we are discussing about preparing for two exams simultaneously, so the significance increases multi-folded times. Here are some quick tips on how you can better focus on time management:

  1. Newspapers and journals: Staying updated with the general knowledge and all that is going on around the world is very helpful. Moreover, English also improves a lot this way.
  2. Solve practice aptitude tests: You will gain perspective with solving aptitude questions. Also, you will be prompt with great speed to complete the exam within the bound time.
  3. Revise: I shall discuss again later why this is important but Revision will improvise on time management as it helps you gain confidence. This way you won’t have to spend a lot of time thinking.

Do more and more practice

Practice makes the man perfect. For the examination, when you have read any topic once then pick up the GATE questions that have been asked from that topic, then pick up the ESE questions that have been asked from the same topic. To become perfect in anything, you need to do a lot of practice. So, practice as much as you do.

 Guidance

For achieving something really good, you need proper guidance. This is same in the case of examination. The proper guidance will put you on the path in the right direction. The guidance can be taken from senior, coaching institute and some previous year topper. Professors in your class can also help you with proper guidance. We are in an era where study often is overthrown by smart studies.

Revisions

Revisions are always important. They will keep making you confident every time you revise some more. And when talking about both the exams, it may be difficult to focus on both the exams simultaneously. So it’s better to revise the common subjects of both the exams first. Here also time management plays a vital role.

Keep motivated

Motivation is the key to success it is one of a very famous line. Yes, it’s true, if you are motivated to do something then do that thing, is not that hard for you. It doesn’t matter what others are doing or saying, what matters is what you are doing. Always stay motivated towards your goal. Because no matter how much you are left behind Even if you start now you can cover-up. It’s never too late.

We hope that this article helped you. Wish you all the best for your GATE preparation and examination.
